Establishing Cell Lines
With recent advances in Whole Genome Amplification, we have greatly reduced the use of cell lines. In select cases (especially for consanguineous multiplex families) the lab will request that blood from affected family members be shipped directly to a facility in Massachusetts for immediate processing into Cell Lines.
Blood Samples for Cell Line Transformation:
1. Draw two 10 ml tubes ACD solution A (yellow top) or
equivalent (such as EDTA) from each AFFECTED family member. The tubes should be inverted (not shaken) and left at ROOM
TEMPERATURE.
2. Label each tube with the patient's hospital number or other code
immediately to avoid confusing the samples.
3. Fill out a Requisition form for each
person (see below for downloadable versions and instructions)
Requisition Form:
**ONE COMPLETED FORM PER
PERSON MUST ACCOMPANY SAMPLES
4. Federal Express Priority /
International Priority (or the fastest available shipping method) to send
samples to the address below. You
are welcome to charge shipping costs to the lab FedEx account-contact us for
details.

Please send the package the same day the blood is drawn.
If possible, please draw the blood early in the week so it does not
reach the processing facility on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. When you send the samples, please
notify us and the processing facility by sending email to BSF@partners.org and gleesonlab@ucsd.edu so we know when to expect the blood.
If you would like, the lab will send you a kit with appropriate tubes for blood drawing as well as requisition forms for the cell line transformation facility, instructions, and return materials.
